Updated Checked against the Roblox Newsroom and Roblox Help Center
Roblox is a free online platform where you play millions of games built by other players, from horror survival and anime fighters to tycoons and pet simulators. One account works on PC, Mac, phones, tablets, Xbox, PlayStation and Meta Quest, and Robux is the currency for avatar items and in-game upgrades. This guide covers how Roblox works, how to start, Robux and Roblox Plus, the best games right now, codes, free items, safety and fixes for common problems.

What Is Roblox?
Roblox is not a single game but a platform that hosts millions of games made by independent creators, from solo developers to full studios. You download one app, sign in once, and jump between a horror game, a racing game and a fishing game without installing anything new. Your avatar, friends list and Robux follow you everywhere on Roblox. Roblox briefly called its games “experiences,” but “games” is the term players and Roblox use today.
How do Roblox games work?
Every Roblox game is built in Roblox Studio, a free creation tool for Windows and Mac, and creators earn Robux when players buy passes, items or upgrades inside their game. Creators design maps, write code in Luau (Roblox’s scripting language) and publish whenever they want, which is why the catalog moves so fast: a new game can go from zero to over a million players in weeks, as Steal An Egg did in 2026. Quality varies a lot, and the Roblox games that last usually have frequent updates, active communities on Discord or X, and events that bring players back. Those are the games we cover first in our Roblox game guides.
Is Roblox free to play?
Yes. Downloading Roblox, creating an account and playing games costs nothing. Money only comes in if you choose to buy Robux, subscribe to Roblox Plus or purchase passes inside specific games. Plenty of Roblox players never spend anything and still enjoy the full catalog, especially with the free items Roblox and creators hand out during events.
What devices can you play Roblox on?
Roblox runs on Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Chromebook, Xbox, PlayStation 4 and 5 (in supported countries) and Meta Quest 2, Quest Pro and Quest 3 headsets. Cross-play is on by default, so a friend on a phone can join you on PlayStation. There is no official Nintendo Switch version of Roblox as of October 2026. Some games are designed for keyboard and mouse and feel clunky on touch screens, so check the game page for supported devices before you commit.
How Do You Get Started on Roblox?
To get started on Roblox, create a free account with your real birthday, secure it with 2-step verification, customize your avatar and pick a game from Roblox Charts or our recommendations. The whole setup takes about five minutes.
How do you create a Roblox account?
- Go to roblox.com or download the official Roblox app from your device’s store.
- Enter your real birthday. Roblox uses it to set age-appropriate features, so don’t fake it.
- Pick a username (changing it later costs Robux) and a strong, unique password.
- Add and verify an email address. It’s your lifeline if you ever lose access.
- Turn on 2-step verification in Settings → Security right away.
How do you customize your Roblox avatar?
You customize your Roblox avatar in the Avatar editor, where you can change your body, skin tone, clothing and animations. Every account gets a set of free basics, and the Marketplace has thousands of free and paid items made by Roblox and community creators (UGC). Before spending Robux, check our free Roblox items page: events like The Hollow and gift card bonus items are the easiest way to build a good-looking avatar for nothing.
How do you find good games on Roblox?
The fastest way to find good Roblox games is Roblox Charts, which ranks games by players, trends and genre. The home screen also recommends games based on what you play. Our best Roblox games by genre lists go one step further: we pick the ones worth your time and explain who each one is for.
What Are Robux, Roblox Plus and Gift Cards?
Robux is Roblox’s virtual currency, Roblox Plus is the $4.99/month subscription that replaced Premium for new members in April 2026, and Roblox gift cards are prepaid cards you redeem for Robux or Roblox Plus. All three are optional; you can play Roblox without any of them.
What are Robux used for?
Robux are used to buy avatar items, game passes, private servers and in-game upgrades on Roblox. You can get Robux by buying it in the app or on the website, redeeming a Roblox gift card, or earning it as a creator when people spend in your game.
Are free Robux generators real?
No. Free Robux generators are always scams. Every site, video or Discord message promising free Robux is trying to steal your account, your password or your payment info. Roblox will never ask for your password, and no tool can “add” Robux to an account. If it sounds too good to be true, close the tab.
What is the difference between Roblox Plus and Roblox Premium?
Roblox Plus, launched on April 30, 2026 for $4.99/month, gives discounts on purchases instead of the monthly Robux stipend that Roblox Premium includes, and Premium no longer accepts new members. Here is how the two compare:
| Feature | Roblox Plus (current) | Roblox Premium (legacy) |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $4.99/month | Closed to new members |
| Monthly Robux | None | Yes, for existing members |
| Discount on purchases | 10%, rising to 20% after your first two months | No |
| Private servers | Free paid private servers | No |
| Robux transfers | Fee-free (parent approval for under-18s) | No |
| Trading and selling items | Yes | Yes |
| 10% bonus on Robux purchases | No | Removed May 30, 2026 |
If you already have Premium and mostly value the monthly Robux, keeping it usually makes sense. If you’re new and spend Robux regularly, Plus is the only option and pays off once the discount kicks in. Full breakdown in our Roblox help center.
How do you redeem a Roblox gift card?
To redeem a Roblox gift card, sign in, go to roblox.com/redeem, type the PIN from the back of the card and confirm. Roblox’s official gift card FAQ states that the cards don’t expire, so there’s no rush, but redeem them only on the official page. Many cards also unlock a free bonus avatar item each month. Step-by-step instructions for every device are in our guide on how to redeem a Roblox gift card.

Player counts change by the hour, so treat these as a snapshot from public trackers (Rokoala and RoVitals).

What are the best Roblox games by genre?

- Shooter / competitive: RIVALS is the go-to for fast 1v1 and team duels.
- Anime / RPG: Blox Fruits remains the biggest long-term grind on the platform.
- Simulator / collecting: Steal An Egg and Fisch reward steady progress and frequent updates.
- Social: Murder Mystery 2, Dress To Impress and Brookhaven are best with friends.
How Do Roblox Codes Work?
Roblox codes come in two types: promo codes issued by Roblox and redeemed at roblox.com/redeem, and in-game codes created by each game’s developer and redeemed inside that game. Mixing them up is the number one reason codes “don’t work.” Our Roblox codes hub lists every game we track and how many codes are active.
What is the difference between promo codes and in-game codes?
- Promo codes are issued by Roblox, redeemed at roblox.com/redeem and give free avatar items. They are rare these days, and our Roblox promo codes page only lists codes we’ve confirmed.
- In-game codes are created by each game’s developer and redeemed inside that game, usually through a Codes or Settings button. They give game-specific rewards like boosts, currency or spins.
- No code system: some huge Roblox games, including Steal An Egg, don’t use codes at all. Any page listing codes for them is guessing.
Where do official Roblox codes come from?
Official Roblox game codes only come from four places: the game’s description on its Roblox page, the developer’s official Discord server, the developer’s official X account, or the game’s official Trello or wiki. We only publish codes we find in one of those sources. If a site lists a code nobody official has posted, assume it’s fake or expired.
How Can You Get Free Items on Roblox?
The best way to get free items on Roblox is through official platform events, promo codes, gift card bonus items and limited-time UGC drops. Right now the main source is The Hollow, a Halloween survival event that starts October 22, 2026 at 2 p.m. PT and runs through November 2. A new monster from a famous horror game appears every day for nine days (including The Deer from 99 Nights in the Forest and Seek from DOORS), quests unlock exclusive UGC rewards, and a live finale kicks off on the morning of October 31. Our The Hollow event guide tracks every night as it goes live. Outside big events, we keep every legit freebie in one place, scam-free, on our free items page.
What Are the Best Roblox Tips for Beginners?
The most important Roblox tips for beginners are to secure your account with 2-step verification, read each game’s description, join official communities for updates, and wait before spending Robux. These twelve tips cover the rest:
- Secure your account first. Verified email plus 2-step verification stops almost every account theft.
- Read the game description. It often lists controls, update days and active codes.
- Join the official community. Discord and X are where developers post updates and codes first.
- Don’t buy Robux on day one. Play for a week, learn what you actually enjoy, then decide.
- Try before you buy game passes. Many passes are only worth it once you know the game well.
- Use favorites. Favoriting a game puts it on your home screen and helps you track updates.
- Play during update windows. Many games update on a fixed day (Steal An Egg updates on Saturdays), and the first hours bring new content and codes.
- Lower graphics if you lag. Open the in-game menu and drop Graphics Quality before blaming your internet.
- Join private or friend servers. They’re calmer, especially for grinding or learning a new game.
- Ignore “trade first” requests. In trading games, never hand over an item before the other player does through the official trade window.
- Use tier lists as a starting point. Our Roblox tier lists explain the criteria, so you can decide what fits your playstyle.
- Never use exploits or scripts. They get accounts banned and are a common way to install malware.
Is Roblox Safe?
Roblox is generally safe when you use its built-in protections: age checks for chat, text filters, parental controls, and block and report tools. Most risks come from scams outside the platform, so the key is protecting your account and ignoring anything that promises free Robux.
How do you protect your Roblox account?
Protect your Roblox account by turning on 2-step verification (an authenticator app is the strongest option), using a password you don’t use anywhere else, and logging out of shared devices. If you ever get a login alert you don’t recognize, change your password immediately from Settings → Security.
How do you avoid Roblox scams?
- Never paste anything into your browser console or download “Robux tools.”
- Only log in at roblox.com or in the official app. Look-alike login pages are the most common scam.
- Real promo codes never ask for your password, email or payment details.
- Don’t buy accounts, items or Robux from third-party sites. It breaks Roblox’s rules and can get you banned.
How do voice chat and age checks work on Roblox?
Since January 2026, Roblox requires an age check to use chat features worldwide. You can complete it with a quick facial age estimate in the app, or with ID verification if you’re 13 or older. Roblox then places you in one of six age groups (under 9, 9–12, 13–15, 16–17, 18–20 and 21+), and you mainly chat with people in similar groups. You can still play games without the check, you just can’t chat. Voice chat has its own extra requirements, and our help section walks you through enabling it.
How Do You Fix Common Roblox Problems?
Most common Roblox problems are fixed by checking your connection, lowering graphics settings or confirming that Roblox’s servers are online. Here are the issues players hit most:
- Error code 279: Roblox couldn’t connect you to the game server, usually because of a network, firewall or VPN issue. Device-by-device fixes are in our Roblox error code 279 guide.
- Error code 529: a problem on Roblox’s side. Check Roblox’s official status before troubleshooting anything at home.
- Code not working: check spelling and capitalization, make sure the code is for that exact game, and confirm it hasn’t expired.
- Lag or low FPS: lower graphics quality, close background apps and switch to a wired connection if you can.
- Can’t chat: complete the age check in Settings and review your privacy settings.
Every fix we’ve written lives in our Roblox help section.
